Cinema Futures Scenarios<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Can a participatory futures workshop help us identify new horizons? Our Cinema Futures project demonstrated that even within a limited timeframe, future scenarios can stimulate innovative thinking and uncover new opportunities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2026, we facilitated a futures thinking workshop for the team of Apollo Cinema Baltics<\/strong>. The objective was to analyse the global and local forces shaping the cinema industry and develop alternative future scenarios to support strategic preparation for upcoming changes. The workshop focused on understanding how technological shifts and changing consumer behaviour may influence the role of cinemas in society over the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did we learn?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The workshop revealed that cinemas are increasingly evolving from places for passive film viewing into destinations for immersive entertainment experiences and social interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants identified ten critical drivers of change, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The growing influence of streaming platforms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The role of artificial intelligence in content creation and programming;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The fragmentation of audience attention across short-form media formats;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Shifting consumer expectations regarding convenience and personalization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    One of the most important insights was that physical cinemas will need to offer experiences that cannot easily be replicated at home. This could take the form of technological spectacle, such as IMAX and 4DX experiences, or trusted community spaces where people can gather and share experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The workshop also highlighted that human interaction and emotional value will become increasingly important as audiences continue to expect greater convenience and more personalised experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Scenario analysis resulted in four distinct future worlds, ranging from a corporate-controlled “Licensed Spectacle” <\/strong>model to a decentralised “Creator Swarm” <\/strong>ecosystem where the boundaries between film, gaming, and virtual reality have largely disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At the end of the workshop, each team was tasked with designing a new business concept that responded to the opportunities and challenges identified in the scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why did we take this approach?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The process began with horizon scanning and signal detection<\/strong>, allowing participants to identify emerging changes already visible today, such as technology giants entering the film industry or the growing impact of social media fragments on film marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Based on these observations, we developed future scenarios centred on key uncertainties. The scenario framework was built around two critical dimensions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Content control:<\/strong> Centralised vs. decentralised;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The role of cinema:<\/strong> Destination-based experiences vs. ubiquitous media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      We also applied the Two Curves methodology<\/strong>, which helped participants reflect on which practices from the past should be left behind and which should be carried into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This enabled teams to examine questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Which established practices, including excessive hierarchy or unsustainable ways of working, may no longer serve future needs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Which strengths, such as social connections, brand trust, and customer communities, remain valuable assets for the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        The process concluded with the design of creative future concepts. Participants were encouraged to explore even seemingly unrealistic or provocative ideas in order to discover new ways of engaging audiences and developing future service models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Futures thinking is particularly valuable for strategy development in rapidly changing sectors. During periods of transition, organisations need open-mindedness, creativity, and the courage to experiment in order to identify new opportunities and build resilience for the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
